We wanted to ensure that the key concepts and student learning outcomes in the Curriculum for a Sustainable Future can be used in Alberta classrooms, and add value to classroom teaching and learning. The answer is YES. This powerful learning story from Christine Crane's grade 9 class at Westmount School is one of 13 that showcases the use of the Curriculum for a Sustainable Future.

Land Use Framework

Okotoks is one of the fastest growing communities in Alberta and land allocation affects our quality of life in many areas. Students studies this issue using a cross-curricular lens and AlbertaTomorrow.ca, to develop their own land use plan for our area. The students worked in stakeholder groups that modelled the South Saskatchewan Regional Steering Committee and determine the ratio of land needed to balance the environmental and socio-economic necessities and had to work with the various stakeholder groups. They gatherer information from a variety of sources and in a variety of ways (peer conferences, field trips). The students presented their final plan to an expert in land use management.
