Curriculum for a Sustainable Future

The October 2020 draft of 'Curriculum for a Sustainable Future' is a guidebook on what students need to learn to be environmentally and energy literate, and is designed to assist Alberta’s curriculum developers as they update curriculum for all grades and subjects.  It outlines what it means to be environmentally and energy literate, and identifies the key concepts and outcomes that students need to learn, in order to create a sustainable future.  The key concepts are organized in four themes; within each theme, the key concepts and student learning outcomes are listed.

How we created the 2nd edition (October 2020)

• In early 2020 we recognized that Albertans need a deeper understanding of all forms of energy, to build energy literacy and depolarize the conversation around energy and environment in Alberta 
• We then hosted a series of workshops, asking 'What should Alberta students learn about energy?' and summarizing what we heard. Read more about the workshops and the workshop summary.
• It has also been updated through inclusion of First Nations, Métis and Inuit content thanks to Doctor Gregory Lowan-Trudeau, professor in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary 
• Worked with a group of reviewers to finalize an Energy Literacy Definition, created energy key concepts and then used this and the reviewers expertise to update the Curriculum for a Sustainable Future.

Using the words in 2nd edition of the Curriculum for a Sustainable Future (CSF), we created a Wordle to represent the words used - the larger the word the more it is used in the CSF.
