Become an AYLEE Member

The Alberta Youth Leaders for Environmental Education (AYLEE) program is for grades 7-12 youth and teachers across Alberta. In the 2022-2023 school year, AYLEE members will have opportunities to:

  • Connect with like-minded folks
  • Learn from experts in the field
  • Collaborate on projects that advance environmental education and climate action
  • Present at and host various environmental and/or education related meetings and events across the province
  • Take action within their schools to help build a brighter, more sustainable future

At its core, the goal of the AYLEE program is to encourage youth to advocate for advanced environmental, energy, and climate change education in Alberta, leading them to inform regional and provincial policy, create change within the K-12 education system, and become climate leaders in their schools, communities, and province.

What will youth who join the program do this year?

This year, there are 3 AYLEE membership levels: Movers, Shakers, and Change Makers. Depending on which membership level you choose, you will participate in a combination of:

  • Social activities where you'll get to hang out with other AYLEE members
  • Learning opportunities where you'll hear from expert guest speakers on the topics of the environment, climate, and advocacy
  • Leadership opportunities where you'll develop and implement a climate action plan
  • Collaboration opportunities where you'll work with other AYLEE members to advocate for increased environmental education
  • Presentation opportunities where you'll share your thoughts on environmental education and climate action with government officials, education leaders, and community members

Check out the video below to hear about Sasha's favourite AYLEE experiences and what you can look forward to!

What will teachers who join the program do this year?

As a teacher, you will engage your students in AYLEE activities and support them as they become leaders within your school. More specifically, your main activities will be to:

  • Get your students signed-up for the program so that they receive emails and the invitation to join our Slack
  • Encourage your students to attend meetings and help them to stay up-to-date
  • Assist in coordinating with your students, as you would a typical field trip, if and when we have in-person events to ensure students can attend and participate in these unique opportunities
  • Attend meetings if you want to! We have virtual biweekly meetings and occasional planning days on weekends, it isn't required that you attend these but we always appreciate a teachers perspective if you're interested!

In participating in these activities, you'll also receive more support for your classroom! We'll help you to advance environmental education in your school through resources and recommendations, connecting you with other teachers who are trying to do similar things, and creating more dialogue between you and your students so you can work together on implementing climate solutions.

“I value AYLEE because it is a place where I am not just some kid caring about the world but rather I am part of a group of people who all care; which has made taking climate action possible. The skills I learn and gain in AYLEE - alongside other students - are ones I can use in my entire life, and that for me is such a powerful tool to have with me. I also value the supportive community created from the amazing youth in AYLEE to the hard working adults who help make this possible.”
